Large wallets — when space matters more than slimness

At some point the slim wallet is no longer enough. Bank and credit card, two loyalty cards, an identity card, a few receipts, plus notes that should not be creased — and suddenly the press stud will not close.

For that case there are the large models. 23 wallets for women and men, with a full-length note compartment, considerably more card slots and a coin compartment that takes more than a handful of change.

How to recognise a genuinely large wallet

Large does not automatically mean that more fits in. Four points decide it:

A note compartment over the full length: depending on the denomination, a banknote measures up to 16 centimetres. If you do not want to fold it, you need a compartment of that length.
The number of card slots: from eight individual slots upwards, cards sit side by side instead of stacked. That is gentler on them and makes them quicker to pull out.
A second note section: practical for keeping receipts or a second currency separate.
A window pocket for an identity card: it saves rummaging at the till or the counter.

Which of these features a model has is stated, with measurements, on its product page. If you are unsure, simply count the cards in your current wallet and add two.

Portrait or landscape format

Portrait-format wallets are narrower and taller. They fit upright into the inside pocket of a jacket and are often built with a zip all the way round. Landscape-format ones lie flatter and are the classic design for men.

For a handbag the format hardly matters — what counts there is whether the wallet is easy to take hold of. For a trouser pocket the rule is: large models do not belong in one. They bend when you sit down and the seam suffers.

Why leather counts for particularly much on large models

The larger the wallet, the more weight hangs on the seams. A full large wallet quickly weighs 250 grams. That is why we use through-dyed genuine leather with stitched rather than glued edges — glued edges are the place where cheap models come apart after a year or two.

For women

Most of the large models in the range are women's purses, frequently portrait format, often with a zip all the way round. The advantage: nothing falls out, even when the purse is lying upside down in a handbag. Inside there is usually a concertina compartment for receipts.

For men

Among the men's models the landscape format with a fold-open coin compartment dominates. If you carry a lot of cards, go for the travel and business models — they have additional compartments, are a little thicker in return and go into a jacket rather than a trouser pocket.

Frequently asked questions

How many cards fit into a large wallet?

Depending on the model, eight to over twenty. What matters is the number of individual slots: where two cards lie on top of one another, more will fit, but pulling them out becomes awkward and the embossing wears down faster.

Do notes fit in unfolded?

Yes, that is the main feature of the large models. Even the 200-euro note, at 15.3 centimetres long, lies flat in the compartment.

Is a large wallet too heavy for a trouser pocket?

Not in weight, but in format. Large models press when you sit down and bend out of shape. They are intended for a jacket, a handbag or a rucksack. For a trouser pocket we recommend the flat landscape formats from the standard range.

Are there large models with a zip all the way round?

Yes, above all among the women's purses. The all-round zip is the most secure version — nothing falls out, however the purse is lying.

Does a large wallet stretch out faster?

It carries more weight, so the workmanship matters. Stitched edges and through-dyed leather stand up to it. What does stretch out are card slots that are doubled up — that can be avoided by putting a single card in each slot.

Our leather goods are made from high-quality, hard-wearing buffalo leather, which is naturally water-repellent. Light rain does them no harm, but they are not fully waterproof.

To keep your Hodalump products going for years, we recommend regular care with our leather grease. If your bag or wallet does get wet, let it dry slowly in the air — never directly on a radiator. Dirt can be removed carefully with a dry cloth.

How long does delivery take?

We know you want your new Hodalump bag in your hands as soon as possible. That is why we usually ship orders within 24 hours of receiving payment.

Delivery within Germany takes around 1–2 working days. Orders to other European countries can take 2–4 working days depending on the country. We work with reliable carriers such as DHL to make sure your parcel reaches you quickly and safely.
