Wallets with a coin compartment — for anyone who carries change

Card payment or not: at the baker's, at the market stall and at the shopping trolley you need coins. A wallet without a coin compartment only puts the problem off — sooner or later the change ends up loose in a trouser pocket.

Here you will find 44 models with their own coin compartment, for women and men, from €24.95 to €79.95. All in genuine leather, all with a compartment that can be opened with one hand.

Three designs — and what they are good for

Not every coin compartment is the same. The difference decides how quickly you get at your change and how much bulk the wallet adds:

  • Press-stud compartment: the classic solution. It folds open, you see all the coins at once and can pick out what you need. It adds a little bulk, but it is the quickest.
  • Zip compartment: holds most securely, nothing falls out even when the wallet is upside down in a rucksack. In return you need two hands.
  • Tray compartment: a shallow well from which you tip the coins into your palm. Space-saving and typical of slim models.
  • Separate coin compartment at the back: it sits on the outside, so that the wallet stays flat inside. Practical if you often need only coins.

Which design a model has is stated on its product page. If in doubt: if you pay a lot in cash, take the press stud. If you put the wallet in your back pocket, take the zip.

Staying flat despite a coin compartment

The most common objection to a coin compartment: the wallet gets thick. That is true — but less so than you would think, and it depends on the construction. Models with an external compartment stay flat inside. With internal compartments the fold decides it: a bi-fold adds less bulk than a tri-fold.

Our flattest models with a coin compartment come to around two centimetres when filled. If you need something slimmer still, the slim wallets include versions with a tray compartment — those manage without an additional layer.

Leather that keeps up

The coin compartment is the place where a wallet gives up first: it is opened most often, and the seam at the fold takes the most movement. That is why we use through-dyed genuine leather there and stitched rather than glued edges. A press stud that no longer holds after six months is more annoying than a few euros extra.

For women and men

The layout differs less than you would expect. Men's models are mostly landscape format and flatter, women's models more often portrait format with more card slots and a larger coin compartment. Both work for either — the question is rather whether the wallet is to go into a trouser pocket or a handbag.

A flat landscape format belongs in a trouser pocket. In a handbag it may be larger, and you will find things again more quickly there. If you need both, take a medium-sized model with a zip all the way round.

As a gift

A wallet with a coin compartment is one of the few gifts that get used every day. You need to know no size and take no measurement — only whether the person tends to pay in cash or by card. For a lot of cash: press stud. For little: tray compartment.

Frequently asked questions

How many coins fit into a coin compartment?

In press-stud compartments about 20 to 30 coins, without the wallet becoming uncomfortably bulky. Zip compartments take more, because they stretch. Tray compartments are meant for ten to fifteen coins at most.

Which is better: press stud or zip?

A press stud is quicker and can be worked with one hand. A zip holds more securely and loses nothing if the wallet is dropped. If you want to be quick at the till, take the press stud. If you throw the wallet loose into a rucksack or a bag, take the zip.

Does the coin compartment stretch out over time?

With cheap material, yes. With through-dyed genuine leather the compartment stretches a little, but in doing so it moulds to its contents and stays closed. The press stud is the wearing part — ours are set rather than merely punched in.

Will a wallet with a coin compartment fit into a trouser pocket?

The flat landscape formats do, even when full. Large portrait-format and zip models are meant more for a jacket or a handbag. The measurements are given on every product page.

Can I use the coin compartment for other things?

Yes — a trolley token, a locker key, earplugs. It is simply the only closed compartment in the wallet, and it is put to other uses accordingly.

Hodalump & Ratschkatl® – Frequently Asked Questions

Wer ist Hodalump & Ratschkatl®?

We are a family business from Upper Bavaria, now in the fourth generation. That gives us knowledge of leather goods going back to 1947, and it shows in the quality of our products.

We combine rustic design with a modern touch — that is how we built our brand Hodalump & Ratschkatl®.

Sind eure Lederwaren wasserfest?

Our leather goods are made from high-quality, hard-wearing buffalo leather, which is naturally water-repellent. Light rain does them no harm, but they are not fully waterproof.

To keep your Hodalump products going for years, we recommend regular care with our leather grease. If your bag or wallet does get wet, let it dry slowly in the air — never directly on a radiator. Dirt can be removed carefully with a dry cloth.

With the right care, your Hodalump stays a reliable companion in any weather.

How long does delivery take?

We know you want your new Hodalump bag in your hands as soon as possible. That is why we usually ship orders within 24 hours of receiving payment.

Delivery within Germany takes around 1–2 working days. Orders to other European countries can take 2–4 working days depending on the country. We work with reliable carriers such as DHL to make sure your parcel reaches you quickly and safely.

As soon as your parcel is on its way, you will receive a shipping confirmation with a tracking number so you can follow your order at any time.

If you have any questions about your delivery, our customer service is always there to help.

How do returns and exchanges work?

We want you to be completely happy with your Hodalump order. If an item does not meet your expectations, or you would like to exchange it, you can do so easily.

How does a return or exchange work?
Send a short message to our customer service at kundenservice@hodalump-ratschkatl.de with your order number and the reason for the return.

Can I buy your products in shops as well?

Yes, you can buy our leather goods in store too — at selected OBI and Hagebau stores, at various specialist leather retailers and in local shops. Altogether we are stocked by more than 500 retailers. There you can also pick up our products and see the quality for yourself. The widest choice, though, is right here in our online shop.
