Bank and credit cards transmit contactlessly these days. That is convenient at the till — and at the same time it means a reader can address the card from a few centimetres away without your taking it out. The same applies to identity documents and company cards.

A wallet with RFID protection has a metallic shield in the leather layer. It interrupts the radio field for as long as the card is in the wallet. To pay, you take it out as always.

What the protection does — and what it does not

So that expectations are right, here is the sober assessment:

It prevents contactless reading for as long as the card is in the shielded layer.
It does not protect against theft of the card itself, nor against fraud on the internet.
It is no substitute for blocking a card — if you lose it, the rule still stands: have it blocked immediately.
It has no effect on the card, demagnetises nothing and does not shorten its life.
It works permanently, without a battery or maintenance.

How high the risk actually is, is judged differently by different people — amounts for contactless payments are capped, and readers have to come very close. If you would rather not have the worry, a shielded wallet puts you on the safe side.

How to tell

From the outside you cannot see that a wallet is shielded — that is the point of it. The layer sits between the lining and the outer leather and adds hardly any bulk. Whether a model has the protection is stated on its product page.

Which model for whom

If you carry only two to four cards, a card holder serves you best: flat, quickly to hand, fits into any pocket. If you carry cards, notes and coins together, take the classic wallet — that comes shielded in every size.

For everyday use with a lot of cards — bank, credit, loyalty cards, company pass — models with many individual slots are worth it. The cards are then not stacked, which makes them easier to pull out and is gentler on them.

Care

The shielding is maintenance-free. It sits inside and does not age. For the leather around it the usual applies: not in the washing machine, not dried on the radiator, treated with leather balm now and then.

Frequently asked questions about RFID protection

Does the protection work permanently?

Yes. It is a passive shield of metal mesh, not electronics. There is nothing to charge, nothing to replace and nothing that can break.

Can I still pay contactlessly with it?

To pay, you take the card out as you would otherwise. For as long as it is in the shielded layer it is not detected — that is exactly the purpose.

Does the shielding harm my cards?

No. It only blocks a radio field. The magnetic stripe, the chip and the data remain untouched.

Are identity cards and passports protected as well?

If they are in a shielded compartment, yes. Identity cards and passports transmit contactlessly too. For the passport we stock separate travel holders.

Do I really need this?

Honest answer: the cases are rare, and amounts for contactless payments are capped. If you find the thought uncomfortable, you get the reassurance from us at no extra charge — the shielding costs nothing more, it is simply worked in.

Our leather goods are made from high-quality, hard-wearing buffalo leather, which is naturally water-repellent. Light rain does them no harm, but they are not fully waterproof.

To keep your Hodalump products going for years, we recommend regular care with our leather grease. If your bag or wallet does get wet, let it dry slowly in the air — never directly on a radiator. Dirt can be removed carefully with a dry cloth.

With the right care, your Hodalump stays a reliable companion in any weather.

How long does delivery take?

We know you want your new Hodalump bag in your hands as soon as possible. That is why we usually ship orders within 24 hours of receiving payment.

Delivery within Germany takes around 1–2 working days. Orders to other European countries can take 2–4 working days depending on the country. We work with reliable carriers such as DHL to make sure your parcel reaches you quickly and safely.

As soon as your parcel is on its way, you will receive a shipping confirmation with a tracking number so you can follow your order at any time.
