With men, the usual question is: what do I get him? With women it's: will I get her taste right? That's a different problem, and it isn't solved by a longer product list but by a shorter one.
So this article isn't ordered by price but by risk. Right at the front are the presents where you can hardly go wrong, even if you've never seen the inside of her wardrobe. Right at the back is what you should only give if you really do know her.
Why "something in leather" goes wrong more often with women
A men's wallet essentially comes in three constructions and two colours. With women's wallets and bags the spread is many times greater: format, closure, how it's carried, colour — and any one of those axes can tip the present over. On top of that, a bag is worn visibly. A wallet disappears into the bag; a bag doesn't disappear anywhere.
From which follows a simple ranking: the more visible the item, the better you need to know her. Small leather goods are invisible and therefore safe. A shoulder bag in a particular colour is the opposite of that.
There's a second reason that rarely gets named: women buy leather goods for themselves more often than men do. Someone who deliberately chose her wallet two years ago has made a decision your present would first have to overrule. With a man who was given his wallet back in 2013, the situation is different. So the most reliable question before buying isn't "what would she like", but "what is she missing".
Sort out the size first — but not her clothing size
Clothing is out for Christmas anyway if you're unsure. The size you have to establish with leather goods is a different one: the size of her wallet.
You can check that without asking. Picture her current wallet in your hand. Is it big enough for notes to go in unfolded, with a zip running all the way round? Then it's an organising tool, and a small wallet would be an imposition. Does it fit in a jacket pocket and close with a press stud? Then it was deliberately chosen small, and a large one would be just as much of an imposition. A second clue: where does she keep her change? Anyone who pays cash needs a coin section. For someone who has paid only by card or phone for years, a large coin section is wasted space.
Up to €25: the things you don't buy for yourself
This is the most reliable bracket of all, because it addresses a point where almost every woman has an unsolved everyday problem.

Here, the up-to-€25 bracket isn't the budget option, it's the only right one. The reverse also holds: if you know her very well, the up-to-€25 bracket is too little as a Christmas present on its own. Then it belongs alongside something else as an extra.
€25 to €60: wallet or phone bag — but not both
In this bracket you have to choose, and the choice depends on how she gets about.
If she always has a bag with her anyway

What goes wrong most often on 24 December
- The wrong colour. The single most common mistake. If you can't name her colours with confidence, take brown or black and no special edition.
- Replacing something that works. If her wallet is in perfect shape, don't give her a second one. Give her what's missing alongside it — key case, card holder, phone bag.
- The set made up of lots of small things. Three small items together don't come across as more generous than one good one. They come across as three small items.
- Clothing without knowing the size. Women's lederhosen run from 36 to 44, and that isn't a size you guess.
A final word on expectations: new leather is stiff and it smells. A wallet that still closes stubbornly on 24 December will have settled in after four weeks. That isn't a fault, it's the normal beginning.
What to pick if you can't decide
